Sixty-eight more patients lost their lives to the killer virus - the highest daily toll since November 20, when 75 deaths were recorded in 24 hours in Yorkshire. It takes the total number of people to have died from the virus in Yorkshire's hospitals to 5,733. Meanwhile, almost 2,000 new cases of the virus have been identified in the county and infection rates have risen in all but three areas. Scarborough, Ryedale and Barnsley had lower rates on January 8 - the latest available date - compared to the previous week. 1,953 new cases of coronavirus in Yorkshire There have been a further 1,953 cases of coronavirus confirmed in Yorkshire in the past 24 hours. The latest data from Public Health England showed Leeds had recorded the most new cases, with 301 but sharp rises were also seen in North Yorkshire (258), Bradford (222) and Sheffield (210).
