Excessive demand for school places during lockdown has prompted Kirklees Council to remind parents they are supposed to keep their children at home, even if they are 'critical workers'. A letter has been sent out by Mel Meggs, the Strategic Director for Children's Services, amid reports many schools have far too many requests for 'critical worker' places. The surge in demand for school places comes after the government widened the criteria for who could qualify compared with the first lockdown. Schools in Kirklees have been told to set a limit of 30% of their pupils allowed into the building with many being forced to turn down frontline workers' requests. Andrew Johnson, managing director of Huddersfield based Bespoke Care and Support said: "One of my carers was refused a place as they were told the school was at capacity. "Once the schools get to 30% capacity, whether you qualify or not, you're put on a waiting list.

"We also know the new strain of Covid-19 is spreading quickly in many parts of the country and we are all under instruction to stay at home whenever possible. "For these reasons, we are asking that critical workers should only request a school place if this is absolutely necessary for their child." She adds: "The government is clear that parents and carers who are critical workers should keep their children at home if they are able to do so."
