Rotherham United have expressed their disappointment over the double departure of Michael Ihiekwe and Michael Smith to South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday. Centre-back Ihiekwe and striker Smith rejected the Miller's contract offers to remain in League One after agreeing undisclosed-length deals to join the Owls last night. Ihiekwe and Smith were hugely influential figure's in Rotherham's promotion to the Championship last season. Liverpool-born Ihiekwe made 52 appearances while Smith scored 25 goals to help the Millers secure the second automatic promotion spot. Rotherham released a statement on their official website following Smith's switch. It read: "The club has been persistent in its attempts to encourage the player to sign a new deal over the summer months, making a series of contract offers which we believe were befitting of Smith's value to the team, and, whilst we are disappointed to see him move on to pastures new, we would like to thank him for his enormous contribution over the past four-and-a-half years." He established himself as a firm fans' favourite at the AESSEAL New York Stadium and was an integral part of Paul Warne's forward line.

. Ihiekwe played over 180 times for Rotherham and enjoyed three promotions to the Championship. A statement on Rotherham's club website read: "The defender is another player who was offered improved terms with Rotherham United and has been in discussions with the club throughout the summer, but opts to pursue a new challenge. Whilst we are obviously disappointed that Michael has chosen to decline those offers, we would like to thank him for his service whilst with the club." With a little over a month to go until the big kick-off, Wednesday manager Darren Moore has signed a number of new faces to bolster their ranks. Ben Heneghan, David Stockdale, Vaulks, Smith and Ihiekwe have all arrived on free transfers. The Owls are searching for more reinforcements in their attempts to escape League One.
