PremierLeague-News.Com - Breaking Sport Transfer News ! Not every manager was in favour of the decision to allow five substitutions but it's been given a big thumbs up from manager Paul Heckingbottom. For this season, clubs in the EFL and Premier League can make an extra two changes than usual, but the number of names on the bench will remain at seven. All substitutions must be used at three intervals, meaning some of the changes must be more than one at a time if a manager is to use his full five. It's a rule change that has courted controversy in recent years, with the likes of Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola the most vocal of those leading the charge. The Blades boss has already been giving this plenty of thought with his coaching staff and has spoken with his players in great detail about how Sheffield United can benefit. He told Yorkshire Live: "We've tried to make a big deal of that with the players. I think it's going to be really important. "If we are really happy with our squad and everyone is performing within a game we ought to be using our subs a lot more and take advantage of the five. I'm happy with it and want to use it. "It's something I will be looking at. We've explicitly spoken to players about it in terms of strategy and what we want to make the most of it. There's a skill to being ready to come on. There's been more emphasis from the staff to make sure the players are physically ready or mentally ready and knowing their roles. "It's any little advantage we can get, it might get us one or two more points over the season and it's going to be really important.

. No disrespect to the younger players but it's tough to impact a game and make the changes you want to win a game when it's like that. "Hopefully, with the squad that we have got players understand their role and the size of it when they are coming on. We may be able to inject a bit more into performances." Traditionally subs have been used at the top end of the pitch when chasing points late on but the extra options will now allow managers to give more thought to making changes at the other end if there is a need to tighten up at the back late on. Utilising the quality of his first team squad is how Heckingbottom, who made all five subs at Watford, will use it and he says it won't be there to give out token appearances to younger players. "It will always be about performance and injecting more into the game," he added. "It won't be about giving debuts away. "Even though we have done 13 or 14 in the last couple of years, which is great for the club and the academy, but we've not just made a decision to do that, there's had to be circumstances, players have earned it or we've had injuries and suspensions and they have had to step up. "They have done well and put themselves in the reckoning but we've got a good strong squad. If everyone's fit there may be times when I am leaving some good players out of the 18. I much prefer it that way. "What it does do generally and traditionally it will be forwards and attacking players who are your subs to inject a bit more energy, whether your front two or midfield, chasing a goal. "We may be able to do that now at the back with certain threats against us if teams make a change and we can make a tactical change at the back. If everyone is prepared and performing coming from the bench, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't make more subs this year."
