PremierLeague-News.Com - Breaking Sport Transfer News ! One of the great ironies of Manchester City's recent success is that generally speaking they do not start the Premier League season looking like champions. City have won four of the last five Premier Leagues, but in the past two in particular they have had to work doubly hard further down the line in order to compensate sluggish starts. In 2020/21 Pep Guardiola's side took just 12 points from a possible 24 in their opening eight league games, a return that left them 11th in the table and eight points off top spot. A 0-2 defeat at Spurs on November 21st was followed by a run of 17 games without defeat, with City eventually winning the title by a 12-point margin. They then went on a 12-game winning run, before holding off the challenge of Liverpool in the final months of the season. Players returning late to pre-season due to international commitments, key players starting the campaign injured and other factors contributed to the sluggish starts that City ultimately recovered from. In both seasons City showed that it's not about how you start, but how you finish. However, if City begin this term in a similar fashion, then it might not be so easy to catch up with the leading pack. Whereas City had no real title challenger in 2020/21 and only Liverpool last season, this time round there could be at least four sides vying for top spot. Guardiola and Klopp's sides will, of course, be the favourites to go the distance, but Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal have all recruited well and should all make the title race tighter than ever before. In regards to the pressure placed on his side by Liverpool, on Friday Guardiola admitted to reporters that his players must start the season strongly or risk being left behind. . In both of the past two seasons City have embarked on long winning streaks after sluggish starts around November and December time. A mid-season break will make that impossible, and disrupt any momentum that City might start to build in the preceding weeks. There's also the chance that key players return from the tournament tired or injured, something that would surely inhibit a return to brilliant form. "There are two [seasons], one before the world cup, you can't win it before but you can lose it," Guardiola said. "You have to start well, knowing that if we drop points you have 37 fixtures. We won two Premier Leagues [by] one point, we know we can win 12-14 in a row." So far so good this summer though, according to Guardiola. As it summed up: "You have to start well but also the feeling since we arrive, maybe we have a longer vacation than normal, the team I rely on them a lot. I see every training session, the guys are still there. How they're training every day, I see we're still there. The confidence I get is from the pitch, every training session. How incredibly focused they are, so far is really there. We'll see, in the low moments how they behave, my job when they are low is to lift them."
