She has returned again this season. After a tense cliffhanger in episode five, we learn in the latest instalment that Ryan Pilkington has been shot following a stand-off with Kate Fleming. Fleming and DCI Jo Davidson flee but are quickly caught and Davidson is brought in for an interview with Carmichael as well as DI Steve Arnott and Ted Hastings. Why do fans think she’s H?There are several reasons why fans believe that Carmichael is in fact the mysterious H with some feeling that the interview scene with Davidson in episode six provided clues. Her haste to shut down lines of inquiry about police corruption and H or “the fourth man”, to the annoyance of Hastings, was something viewers picked up on as a possible clue. One fan said: “Carmichael has to be the “Fourth Man”, the way she kept trying to shut down Jo’s interview #LineofDuty“ Carmichael is H. Jo Davidson knows Carmichael is H and Carmichael knows Jo knows. All throughout that interview, H had her eyes on her, forcing her into "no comments" all the way through. #LineofDuty— Pete (@Fitzy084) April 25, 2021 https://twitter.com/shynes93/status/1386425905761845248 Others suggested that her tapping her pen four times during the interview was an indication that she is H, as four dots indicate H in Morse code. One fan said on Twitter: “During the interview, Carmichael clicks her pen 4 times… 4 clicks is Morse Code for ‘H’”.Several others echoed this sentiment, with another pointing out it was similar to “Dot [Cottan] squeezing Kate’s hand four times before he died”. This was part of a clue that led to the revelation that H is four people – the last of which is still not known.

Carmichael is H. She tapped her pen four times – H in morse code – and took a sip of water. The guilty ones always drink water in the interview room. #LineofDuty #HIsCarmichael— ConsistentlyInconsistent (@Buggery_Bollock) April 25, 2021
Not Carmichael tapping her pen 4 times in the middle of Jo's interview – just like Dot squeezing Kate's hand 4 times before he died. Morse code for H. ???? #LineofDuty— Little Z (@Zara252_) April 25, 2021
Carmichael shut the Interview down every time Osbourne was mentioned. He is obviously H! #LineofDuty— Laura Garside (@LauraGarside) April 25, 2021
What other cryptic clues are there?A more cryptic fan suggestion as to why Carmichael could be more shifty than she seems comes from a past conversation between DS Steve Arnott and Jimmy Lakewell, the Mirror reports. Lakewell said to Arnott in a previous episode: “Look beyond the race claim to find H.” One fan interpreted the words in this sentence as one might a cryptic crossword clue or an anagram and came up with this theory, now shared widely on Twitter: “Race claim + H rearranged = Carmichael.”Many liked the suggestion, with another responding to the comment: “This deserves thousands more likes. Incredible either way!”Another suggestion is that Anna Maxwell Martin, who plays Carmichael may have left a clue on her own Instagram feed.
In a post in March, the actress shared a picture of a dog, with the caption: “Definately mama to this bank drain.”The misspelling of the word “definitely” sparked fans’ attention as this typo was previously seen in messages from H, leading fans to believe Martin could have left a hint. One fan commented on her post: “misspelling of ‘Definately’??? Look into the Race Claim? Race Claim + H = Carmichael….”But to confuse matters, the typo was also previously seen when Ted Hastings was impersonating H.When is Line of Duty next on TV? The final episode of season six of Line of Duty is on Sunday at 9pm on BBC One. You can catch up on all previous episodes on BBC iPlayer. 2
