And the number of stroke cases across the region has hit its highest number for more than a decade. The figures were released in a new report by Public Health Scotland and have been described as “a big warning sign” by one charity. Campaigns director at Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland, Lawrence Cowan, said: “From the figures we can see that even before the pandemic, the number of people whose lives were changed by stroke and heart failure is the highest in a decade. That means more people are being treated compared to 10 years ago and more people are leaving hospital needing support to live well at home.” Public Health Scotland’s latest stroke statistics report looks at cases in 2019-20. During that period, 2,093 Scots lost their lives to a stroke. That was a slight increase on the previous year’s figure of 2,072 but considerably down on the situation at the start of the decade, when 2,613 people died. In Dumfries and Galloway, 93 people died, compared with 82 the year before.

. There were 304 cases of strokes in the region last year, up from 263 the year before and the highest figure since the 2010/11 tally of 312. Across Scotland there were 9,229 cases – the highest figure for more than 10 years. The number of stroke hospital discharges in the region was also at its highest for more than a decade at 673. The Scottish figure of 24782 was also the highest for more than 10 years. Read More Related Articles Rare Robert Burns manuscript commemorating Galloway river smashes estimate at auction There were 661 cases of heart disease in Dumfries and Galloway, down from 687 the year before, Associate director Scotland of the Stroke Association, John Watson, said: “The welcome decrease in stroke mortality over the last decade by 33.3 per cent, can be attributed to advances in stroke treatment and care in Scotland. “However, stroke remains Scotland’s fourth biggest killer and the need for improvements in stroke prevention, treatment and care is recognised by all, including the Scottish Government.” An NHS Dumfries and Galloway spokesman said: “Numbers of stroke cases in Dumfries and Galloway do not change to a great degree year-on-year. We do see some fluctuations with no attributable cause and having a smaller population within the region can mean greater statistical variances.”
