Netball players and fans have voiced their frustration at the BBC for its “disappointing” coverage of the sport during the Commonwealth Games after the broadcaster failed to stream all of the matches. Stacey Jayne Francis-Bayman, who is part of England’s 2022 Commonwealth Games squad, took to social media over the weekend after discovering certain matches were not available on the BBC iPlayer, tweeting that it was a “shame” that no one could find the Jamaica vs South Africa game on the streaming platform. Katherine Talbot, who hosts a netball podcast and has been attending the Commonwealth Games, told i that roughly three games were not shown over the weekend, despite it being confirmed that all netball matches from this year’s games would be shown on BBC iPlayer.It was “very disappointing for fans” that some of matches were not available,” she said. Stephanie Hilborne, CEO of Women in Sport, said the moment should be seized “to get the brilliant game of netball the attention and respect it deserves too”.She said: “Until recently the biggest team sport for girls, netball, has been missing from free to air TV. Yet the Roses won a remarkable Commonwealth Gold for the first time in 2018 – equivalent to the Lionesses’ achievement.”A BBC spokesperson said: “We endeavour to show as much of the Commonwealth Games coverage as possible via BBC TV and up to 11 streams on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport online. “Due to capacity reasons, during particularly busy days at the Games we sometimes have to make difficult decisions about which sports to show live and which to show on delay. We will continue to bring as much of the action to our viewers as possible for the duration of the Games through our extensive coverage across BBC TV, radio and online.”
