PremierLeague-News.Com - The RMT union chief has gained a major following for his consistent ability to wrong foot interviewers and skewer MPs
PremierLeague-News.Com - Breaking Sport Transfer News ! Mick Lynch has caused misery for commuters and business owners this week, but his sardonic delivery and no-nonsense appearances in the media has got even Tory MPs growling their approval. The general secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union has paralysed the rail network by ordering his 40,000 members to down tools, causing chaos on the railways. He may have expected his actions to have made him public enemy number one, but instead he has garnered a cult following from admirers of his ability to consistently wrong-foot interviewers and skewer politicians. Such has been the impact of the “Mick Lynch effect” that Google searches for “join a union” have spiked by 184 per cent, according to the Trades Union Congress.Even the Tory in-house bible The Spectator has showered the union boss with praise, applauding how “hapless Tory MPs that attempted to recite pre-rehearsed cliches and dodgy statistics have been gunned down by the mature, considered and, yes, gruffly charming manner of Lynch”.On the first day of the strikes, an exchange with Sky’s Kay Burley, has been shared thousands of times on social media. When pugnacious Ms Burley demanded to know what his members would do if agency workers tried to cross picket lines to work, a bemused Mr Lynch laughed: “We will picket them, what do you think we will do?“We are on a picket line and we will ask them not to go to work. Do you not know how a picket line works?”Later that day, Tory MP Jonathan Gullis demanded Mr Lynch apologise to the doctors and nurses who had been prevented from going to work and even veteran soldiers, who “risked their lives for our freedoms” and were prevented from celebrating Armed Forces Day. Mr Lynch shot back: “I think the only person who should apologise is Jonathan for talking nonsense. None of that is true.”Perhaps his crowning moment this week, however, was his appearance on Piers Morgan’s struggling TalkTV show, where the host berated him for using a photo of Thunderbirds villain, The Hood, as his Facebook profile picture. Despite there being an obvious passing resemblance between Mr Lynch and the vintage puppet, Mr Morgan was convinced there was a deeper meaning, insisting the TV character was “obviously an evil, criminal terrorist mastermind, described as the world’s most dangerous man, who wrecked utter carnage and havoc on the public”.

. Is that the level journalism’s at these days?”Born in Paddington, west London, and brought up on a council estate, Mr Lynch left school at 16 to go onto work in construction, before he was illegally blacklisted after joining a trade union. His blacklisting meant he was forced to find employment elsewhere, and began working for Eurostar when he became an active member of the RMT.He was elected as general secretary in May last year, when he said: “Our message to the employers and the politicians is that RMT stands ready to campaign and fight against pay freezes, cuts to safety and conditions.”His performances have garnered a growing chorus of approval, with TV actor Hugh Laurie tweeting on Tuesday: “I don’t know enough about the rail dispute. I only observe that RMT’s Mick Lynch cleaned up every single media picador who tried their luck today.”Even Tory MPs were unable to hide their admiration, with one senior backbencher telling i: “His interview with Sky was very amusing. I’ve always got on with him.” Alistair Campbell, the former spinner for Tony Blair, who is well versed in media training, tweeted his approval, saying he liked how he lets Tory MPs “drone on without much facial reaction and then takes them down with facts mixed with gentle scorn”. Former Tory minister Rory Stewart added that his media techniques should be studied, such was his success at dismantling interviewers “with an uncanny knack of flustering his questioners”.Mr Lynch has vowed that the RMT’s campaign of strikes will not relent until Network Rail gives in to demands to drop forced redundancies and improves its offer of a pay rise.TV interviewers will be hoping the rail operators give in to his demands.
