PremierLeague-News.Com - Breaking Sport Transfer News ! The BBC’s heartening Lights Up season, which extends the hand of friendship to theatres and plays in distress, has done well in persuading Katherine Parkinson to star in her own playwriting debut. When Sitting premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2018, Parkinson did not feature, but this splendid actress, whose voice and demeanour hover perpetually on the hazy border between tragedy and comedy, proves the ideal fit. A series of three interlinked monologues, it itself veers between the humorous and the quietly shattering.Three awkward strangers take it in turns to sit for an artist in his home studio. As one of the three, Luke (Mark Weinman), says, “It’s harder than you think, just sitting. Thoughts fly about. You get all… thinky”. Thinky is indeed the all-round order of the day here; Luke, Mary (Parkinson) and Cassandra (Alex Jarrett) nibble nervously on a plate of chocolate biscuits and talk to fill the silence that the unseen and unheard artist leaves, perhaps for reasons of concentration, perhaps as a strategy of power play.Gradually, the sugar or perhaps the seductiveness of the studio silence loosens the trio’s tongues and they start to use the artist as a confessor figure and his studio as a secular confessional.

.The mood of Jeremy Herrin’s still and thoughtful production is one of meditative melancholia, as three lonely people take stock of unfulfilled lives and an aching sense of being fundamentally alone in the world. The most successfully drawn characters are the older two, Luke and Mary; here there are greater depths, of middle-aged loss, regret and family malfunction, that don’t as yet exist for aspiring actress Cassandra.Weinman makes Luke warmly engaging in his woundedness and he has great fun with a selection of the darkly wittiest lines of the hour: “My wife wants to call our daughter Pixie. For f**k’s sake, Pixie! What can she do with a name like that? It’s what you call a cat”. Read More Why live streaming concerts and plays will continue long after in-person performances return Parkinson brings a wonderful wistfulness to single mother Mary, devoted to – perhaps even enslaved to – her young daughter and overcompensating in the realm of family ties for her estrangement from her brilliant sister. The piece runs the risk of veering towards the slight until the closing revelation of what brings these particular sitters to this particular artist. Some might argue that this denouement is unearned, but it certainly rounds these highly personal pen portraits off with quite a flourish. Three elegant pictures from figurative artist Roxana Halls reveal to us the fruits of the artist’s labours after the final word has been spoken.Sitting is available on BBC iPlayer
