Extra funding has been secured for local Cambridgeshire and Peterborough organisations to support victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence. The money, totalling more than £880,000 will allow police and crime commissioner, Darryl Preston to enhance service for people in the community. Darryl Preston said: “This money will mean those fleeing domestic abuse can be helped to find new homes and be able to access specialist emotional and practical support. Survivors of sexual violence can now be offered a safe space to talk things through. “It is crucial that people who have experienced such crimes are provided with the help they need to begin to regain control over their own lives. This money will do just that". Some of the organisations receiving the extra funding over the next three years include; Choices Counselling Service, Peterborough Women’s Aid, One Voice 4 Travellers and The Meadows Children and Family Wing. The additional investment, brings a total of £1.1m extra funding into the county since April 1, 2022.

. As well as this a further £300,000 was previously secured in May 2022 to further tackle domestic abuse and stalking from the Home Office Domestic Abuse Perpetrator Fund. Just under £19,000 was allocated to help support male victims of rape, and just under £100,000 to support victims and survivors of domestic abuse and child sexual abuse with a specialist Stalking and Harassment IDVA (Independent Domestic Violence Adviser) was also secured. When previously speaking to Darryl Preston in May about extra funding for domestic abuse and sexual violence crimes he explained that although he doesn't believe this area of violence to have gotten any worse he said: “There's always more to be done and the reality is domestic abuse can kill.” Explaining this type of crime Darryl added: “We know that between two to three women are killed every week as a result of domestic abuse” adding that this is “totally unacceptable.” He continued: “I will do all I can to secure as many resources, funding and support to tackle, prevent and stop domestic abuse”. Talking about the latest funding of £880K secured Darryl said: “Cambridgeshire and Peterborough may be a small shire county but we certainly have a proven track record of working in partnership to secure extra resources to help the people who live here. “In my Police and Crime Plan I pledged to support victims and we are doing just that,” Darryl added.
