But beyond its cheery comfort, it is also known for tackling important themes of gender and race relations in the context of birth in the 1950s and 1960s. The 12th season of the show is predicted to air on BBC One in January, and will see the characters arriving in 1968. Recently, the creator of the show - Heidi Thomas - talked to Radio Times about everything fans of the show can expect in its much-awaited new series. In the interview, she discussed everything from the ventouse delivery that will be featured in the show, the thalidomide scandal, the individual storylines of beloved characters of the show and some new characters that we can expect to see. "And that can be as simple as ventouse delivery coming in as a sort of improvement or alternative to forceps, certainly." It seems that the new series will be just as focused on medical progress as the previous seasons and will be tackling some very important medical topics.

. Thomas told Radio Times that Season 12 will also be influenced by Enoch Powell's inflammatory anti-immigration speech, which saw him dismissed from the Shadow Cabinet. The event will be used to show the sensitive nature of race relations in Britain in the 1960s. Rhoda, nurse Lucille and fan favourite character Trixie were all mentioned in the interview. Thomas told Radio Times: "Something rather wonderful happens to Trixie, Lucile has to contend with a reasonable amount of sadness, and what else can I say? We have a new nun coming to join the line-up, Sister Veronica." With so much happening in the next season, fans of the show are bound to rejoice at this news!
