PremierLeague-News.Com - Breaking Sport Transfer News ! While the debate around the incumbent Manchester United No. 9 intensified on Sunday night, the last player to wear that shirt was toasting a job well done in the biggest game of the Serie A season. There were few grumbles when United raked in £75million for Romelu Lukaku in the summer of 2019 but his latest match-defining contribution for Inter Milan has taken the Nerazzurri a step closer to a first league title in 11 years. Inter's 3-0 win over AC Milan at the San Siro on Tuesday afternoon stretched their lead to four points at the top of Serie A and momentum is with Antonio Conte's side. Lukaku laid the opener on a plate for Lautaro Martinez with a deft cross before scoring the third and he's now registered 57 goals and 11 assists in 81 games for Internazionale. Having scored at a rate of 0.53 goals per game for United, he's taken that to 0.78 in Milan and he's been close to unplayable at times this season. His contributions probably mean Lukaku will claim a league title medal alongside Ashley Young, Matteo Darmian and Alexis Sanchez. All four were in the United squad Solskjaer inherited in December 2018. Lukaku is one of the best centre forwards in world football right now, but he's playing for the perfect manager. Conte wanted to sign him at Chelsea and finally landed his man at Inter. He's perfect for the 3-5-2 system Conte favours and the stars have aligned for the Belgian. The faith in him and a team built around him are perfect conditions for a glut of goals. That was never going to be on offer at United. Lukaku might well resent the idea that he didn't pull his weight at United, that he was incompatible with a front three Solskjaer wanted to build that was based around pace. Martial's intensity has hardly been through the roof this season. Lukaku certainly had his chances under Solskjaer at United. He was involved in 23 games between the Norwegian replacing Jose Mourinho and the end of the 2018/19 season, which signalled the end of Lukaku's time at Old Trafford. In that time he scored nine goals but they came in gluts. Three in three games against Bournemouth, Newcastle and Reading and then a nine-game drought. Then there was six in three games against Crystal Palace, Southampton and Paris St-Germain before the season ended with a whimper and an eight-game drought. Lukaku's return of 42 goals in 96 games for United is hardly a poor one, but there was a feeling he wasn't offering enough beyond the patchy goalscoring to please Solskjaer.

I think it was better for both sides to go separate ways. I think I made the right decision. “Manchester United has made space for the younger players to come through so I think it was a win-win situation for both of us. “I think I had to rediscover myself. Last year was difficult for me on the professional side, because stuff was not going how I wanted and I was not performing as well. “So I had to find it within myself what was lacking and came to the conclusion that it was time for me to change environment.” Free Manchester United newsletter Manchester United made heavy weather of their 3-1 win over Newcastle, eventually getting the job done at Old Trafford. Marcus Rashford, Daniel James and Bruno Fernandes were on the scoresheet as United got back to winning ways in the league. They have a Europa League second leg vs Real Sociedad on Thursday. Maybe the criticism of United isn't that they sold Lukaku, but that nearly two years on they still haven't signed an adequate long-term replacement. Martial had a good season last term but hasn't convinced as a striker, while the loan deal for Odion Ighalo in January 2020 was a move of desperation, albeit one that worked out better than expected. Now United have Edinson Cavani in their ranks. The 34-year-old is the best striker at the club, but he's clearly not a long-term replacement for Lukaku. That's something United must solve either this summer or, more likely, in 2022. The goals of Lukaku and the struggles of Martial this season aren't a great reflection on United, but that doesn't mean letting the former leave was the wrong decision.
