The Good Morning Britain star is celebrating her 54th birthday today with Derek back at home after spending a year in hospital. This time last year Derek was battling coronavirus and the devastating affect it had on his body. "I would say [it's] miraculous but I don't want to band that word around too much," Kate said when prompted about the moment to Lorraine. "But at the moment the family and I are looking for lots of little things with Derek. He's home, we can hug him - that's a miracle in itself - and we're looking for little bits of him to come more out of the consciousness and come back to us. "Last night I said to him when I was tucking him in and doing various medical bits I said to him, 'Oh it's my birthday tomorrow'. "He looked a bit worried and I said, 'Oh don't worry, I'm not expecting anything. My birthday present is you being home and I'm going to pop in and see you before I go early to Lorraine.' . "It makes me feel a bit emotional actually but it is happy tears." Kate then said she had to not look at Lorraine for a minute as she became emotional but did admit that while it seems like she is "analysing everything" that it is "massive." "Obviously it is wonderful that he says happy birthday because that's what I want to hear but also, we are looking for things that he can hold," Kate said. "I told him that the night before and I had to prompt him a little bit but he held that idea it was my birthday and managed to connect it back and repeat out and that's wonderful. "Those signs like that are just fantastic." Kate was chatting to Lorraine Kelly (Image: ITV) She also went on to discuss another moment when a nurse phoned her to say she had heard Derek speak for the first time. "She said that he said, 'Bill, you smell of Monster Munch'," Kate laughed. "It's not quite the profound thing you hope. "But, she [the nurse] said, 'By the way he does smell of Monster Munch he's just had two packets of massive Monster Munch'." Kate went on to say that their son Billy was laughing and Derek too appeared to smile and want to laugh. "That's a lovely normal moment," Kate admitted.
