People are being reminded of the importance of face coverings after cases of coronavirus have surged in England. Many major supermarkets across the UK are now moving to turn away customers who refuse to wear a face covering without a valid medical exemption. Aldi, Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Waitrose have all clamped down on face mask rules this week after the government warned it may have to tighten restrictions. While on public transport, passengers can be refused travel if they aren't wearing a face covering and don't have a medical exemption. In England, face coverings must be worn on public transport, in shops, supermarkets, banks, post offices, places of worship, museums, galleries, entertainment venues and libraries. After the first offence there will be no discount. For example, receiving a second fine will amount to £400 and a third fine will be £800, up to a maximum value of £6,400. In Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, a £60 fine can be imposed.

The government currently says you don't have to wear a covering if you have "a physical or mental illness or impairment, or disability" and would experience "severe distress" from doing so. This includes: children under the age of 11 in England and Wales, under 13 in Northern Ireland, under five in Scotland people who cannot put on, wear or remove a face covering because of a physical or mental illness or impairment, or disability where putting on, wearing or removing a face covering will cause severe distress anyone speaking to or providing assistance to someone who relies on lip reading, clear sound or facial expressions to communicate to avoid harm or injury, or the risk of harm or injury ‒ including if it would negatively impact on ability to exercise or participate in a strenuous activity police officers and other emergency workers, given that this may interfere with their ability to serve the public But how do you prove you are medically exempt from wearing a face covering? At the moment, the government says people will not be asked to show written evidence of a medical exemption if they are not wearing a face mask - with the public, supermarkets and shops urged to be mindful towards those who may have special circumstances. They also offer a version that you can print out at home Alternatively, the charity Hidden Disabilities has produced their own exemption card or anyone with the right requirements to be exempt from the law. This card simply indicates that you have a hidden disability, illness or impairment and have a reasonable excuse not to wear a face-covering. It costs 55p - with a lanyard available separately.
