PremierLeague-News.Com - Breaking Sport Transfer News ! Oldham, which had the highest coronavirus infection rate in the country two months ago, now has one of the lowest in Greater Manchester. On the day the second national lockdown began in November, Oldham had 800 cases per 100,000 of population, the highest number anywhere in England. However figures released on Tuesday showed the infection rate to be more than half that of its peak. For the week ending January 8, Oldham's infection rate was 384.6 per 100,000, the joint lowest of all ten Greater Manchester boroughs. Despite being one of the lowest in the region now, though, rates have begun to steadily increase again over recent weeks. On December 8, six days after national lockdown ended, its infection rate was 157, a low for the borough since the summer and, as recently as December 26, stood at 175. Since then the numbers of new cases have spiked - a trend seen elsewhere in the region and country. But for the first time since September its rates have been under than the Greater Manchester average which, for the week ending January 8, was 449.1 per 100,000. The borough's public health chief says entering Tier 4 and having national lockdown restrictions enforced when case numbers were lower may have prevented big spikes that have been seen in other areas. And local leaders in Oldham last night sounded a note of caution, saying rates were still high and it was essential everyone followed the rules. (Image: Joel Goodman) Katrina Stephens, the borough's Director of Public Health said: “We are pleased that Oldham is no longer seeing some of the highest levels of infection in the country. "This is down to the hard work of everyone in the borough, including our residents, in following the guidance and taking the necessary measures to prevent the spread of COVID. “Ensuring that we take early action when rates rise is important to containing and managing covid. "Going into tier 4 and then lockdown when our rates were lower than some other areas may have helped avoid a sharper increase in rates and bring transmission under more control. “While our rates are lower than many other areas at the moment, the number of cases is still very high. "We know that the picture can change rapidly therefore it is still essential that we follow the guidance and don’t lose focus on preventing transmission.” (Image: STEVE ALLEN) Primary care leaders and one of the town's MPs said they believed locally targeted testing to be a key factor in helping prevent another big surge in cases. Oldham has been one of the hardest-hit areas by the virus.

"Our social contact has massively reduced, we've found a way of reducing risk by not mixing perhaps as much as other places do. "In a way you almost self-regulate. That becomes normalised. You're not making an exception for lockdown, you've just got used to living that way for a year. "People in Oldham have, almost more than anywhere else bar Leicester, known what it's like to suffer a prolonged period of restrictions and people want to see the light at the end of the tunnel. We are sick of it. "I think people are desperate to do their bit and to know their bit will make a difference." The town's GP network said they believed door-to-door testing and tracing in hotspot areas had helped. Mike Barker, Strategic Director of Health and Resources at NHS Oldham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said: “It’s great to see that the figures for Oldham have decreased in comparison to a few months ago, but it is important not to be complacent.
