PremierLeague-News.Com - Breaking Sport Transfer News ! NEARLY 6,000 more laptops have been given out to children homeschooling in Yorkshire, new figures show - but teaching unions say it still is not enough. The Department for Education handed out 5,935 laptops to council-run schools in the county between December 22 and January 12, according to statistics released on Tuesday. Some 3,041 devices went to pupils at Wakefield Council’s 50 schools. The extra 5,935 laptops mean the Government has provided more than 31,000 devices to Yorkshire’s council-run schools since the pandemic began as part of its Get Help with Technology programme. Leeds City Council’s 196 schools received 934 devices in the latest wave, the second-largest amount behind Wakefield. The city’s council-run schools have received more than 6,600 laptops over the course of the pandemic. But North Yorkshire County Council’s 264 schools have received just 241 devices in the latest wave, an amount former Scarborough headteacher Anne Swift says is “not good enough”. The council’s schools have received 1,851 laptops since the pandemic began. Pupils who cannot access learning from home are classed as “vulnerable” and allowed to attend school. Ms Swift said this means North Yorkshire schools are having to teach more pupils in-person than in the first national lockdown, weakening efforts to control the spread of the coronavirus. “The definition of vulnerable children has been widened, so primary schools in particular are having to have conversations with parents about whether their child really needs to be at school,” said Ms Swift, an officer at the National Education Union’s North Yorkshire branch. “Schools are having to juggle teaching in schools with remote teaching at the same time.

Dr Helen Davey, headteacher of Willow Tree Primary School in Harrogate, said she has still only received 11 of the 57 laptops she has ordered from the Department for Education. She said “significantly more” children of key workers are attending the school than the first lockdown, but not children who cannot access learning from home. On Tuesday the Department for Education said more than 700,000 devices have been delivered to schools across England since the pandemic began. “Over 100,000 were delivered last week alone and by the end of the week three quarters of a million will have been delivered to schools and local authorities,” it read. The Government now plans to send out 1.3 million laptops and tablets - an extra 300,000 to the one million it bought last year.
