PremierLeague-News.Com - Breaking Sport Transfer News ! SHEFFIELD City Region Mayor Dan Jarvis has called for the Government to reject proposals to scrap the Yorkshire leg of HS2 Speaking at today's Transport for the North (TfN) meeting, the Labour mayor said delivering HS2 and the Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) projects in full is "integral" to fixing Yorkshire's transport. Last month Government advisers recommended scrapping HS2's eastern leg past the East Midlands - well short of the original plan to run to Leeds. The report, known as the Integrated Rail Plan, was drawn up by the independent National Infrastructure Commission and is now being considered by the Government. But at today's TfN meeting discussing the plan, Mr Jarvis said the Government should reject the proposals and begin building HS2 and Northern Powerhouse Rail "without delay". "We all know [because of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic] that investment is even more urgent as we try to support and revive our economies," he said. "The Government needs to look deep into its coffers and find the investment required to deliver transformation in the North. My priority for South Yorkshire is to fix our decrepit local transport infrastructure. "The reality is the delivery of NPR and HS2 in full is absolutely integral to doing this. This is the next big test on the Government’s commitment to levelling up." Meeting papers said scrapping the Yorkshire leg of HS2 would have "significant economic, social and environmental implications" for the region. The papers also criticised Government advisers' suggestions that delivering both HS2 and NPR would be "unaffordable".

Sheffield mayor Mr Jarvis criticised the Government report for presenting HS2 and NPR as competing for funding rather than as "different sides of the same coin". "HS2 and NPR are effectively presented as a choice... when the evidence shows they work best in tandem," papers for the TfN meeting read. "None of the proposed packages deliver the level of investment needed to close the productivity gap and “level up” the UK. "The consequence is likely to be ongoing underperformance and regional imbalance, with the North not achieving its full economic potential." At the meeting, TfN board members agreed to send a letter to the Government requesting a meeting with Transport Secretary Grant Shapps about the issue.
