PremierLeague-News.Com - The ITV presenter said he was told NHS dentists were not capable of doing extractions
PremierLeague-News.Com - Breaking Sport Transfer News ! Good Morning Britain host Richard Madeley has sparked a heated debate today following his NHS dentistry comments which prompted viewers to accuse him of "litter tray journalism". The 66-year-old, known for his controversial remarks on the ITV breakfast show, spoke of his conversation with a private dentist last week. Mr Madeley told commentators Kevin Maguire and Andrew Pierce that he explained that NHS dentists "are not capable of doing extractions anymore". He said: "I was talking to a private dentist only last week, who was saying that so many people now have to go private because NHS dentists are not capable of doing extractions anymore. They are simply not trained up to the level, they are not confident doing extractions." And co-host Susanna Reid jokingly added: "Oh, what's that sound I hear? Oh yes, it's all the NHS dentists getting in touch with the programme to say that that is absolutely wrong." Many viewers took to Twitter to share their own experiences, with the majority disputing what Mr Madeley had said. Scott wrote: "I went to dentist with a toothache, she said 'you got a spare 5 minutes', then she extracted the bad tooth. Simple." Good Morning Britain host Richard Madeley (Image: ITV) Tony commented: "@GMB I would suggest it is Richard's dentist that is clearly incompetent. All NHS dentists are capable of extractions. "Only difficult ones get referred to an oral surgeon and not casualty as you incorrectly stated." Kirsty Cowell wrote: "Extractions are a dream to do for a dentist. A root canal which takes hours is paid the same to them as an extraction, so why wouldn’t they not do extractions? The whole of NHS dentistry need assessing. ... fairly certain NHS dentists do know how to extract a tooth."
Susanna Reid was quick to hit back at co-host Richard Madeley on GMB (Image: ITV) One viewer said: "Richard Madeley really is full of s***. NHS dentists know how to extract a tooth, they are trained to the same level as a private dentist. They also won’t send you to A&E to have it removed, they don’t do dental care (unless of medical complications)." Alison commented: "Richard, I had my tooth extracted by an NHS dentist rather than have a crown fitted. It was easier for them." Rebecca tweeted: "I’ve had root canal and extensive treatment from my NHS dentist and she is fantastic." Sue wrote: "@GMB you might want to explain to @richardm56 that NHS dentists also do private work, or does their ability to do their job suddenly reappear at the sight of a private patient." Tina said: "What's Richard Madeley on? An NHS dentist extracted my wisdom teeth." However, another person replied: "Ours don't do extractions. I have to go to the dental hospital." Meanwhile, Hayley said: "I had severe facial swelling and infected root canal and was told my NHS dentist they could not extract as they were too busy but if I went private they could see me any day."
