PremierLeague-News.Com - Newcastle United could have no choice but to turn to familiar faces for the 2021/22 season
PremierLeague-News.Com - Breaking Sport Transfer News ! Newcastle United would be facing a massive gamble if they opt against retaining some of their current squad next summer. Steve Bruce has already stated there will be very little - if anything - to spend in the summer window meaning the club must make ends meet with either loans or free transfers. With gate money non-existent this season and all match day revenue disintegrating in the last 12 months due to Covid, Newcastle have to work as shrewdly as ever in the transfer market. And Bruce knows that serious consideration must be given to contract renewals in order to preserve a layer of experience across his squad. Bruce told me that talks with Dwight Gayle, Andy Carroll, Jacob Murphy and Federico Fernandez are "ongoing" for the men who are set to be out of contract at the end of the season. Fabian Schar has the option of another year but may yet turn that down while Henri Saivet and Christian Atsu were always likely to leave in June. Schar's name has already been circulated to clubs in Europe with Serie A and La Liga sides alerted and the Switzerland international knowing that the summer's Euros could be a big platform for him to impress. Losing Gayle, Carroll, Murphy or Fernandez could prove to be a costly business for Newcastle though and unless they have some high profile Bosman deals lined up, a market they are currently scouring, there could be some notable gaps in their squad. The pair cost a combined fee of £20million in 2016 and 2017 respectively and Newcastle would need proven Premier League quality or loan deals to make up their squad.

. Fernandez, who celebrates his 32nd birthday today, offers a low maintenance contract renewal and has proved reliable since coming in from Swansea City for £6million in 2018. Since then the former Argentina international has made 74 appearances and scored twice in the top-flight. Despite the uncertainty around the club as far as takeover talk and court battles are concerned, work for next season has already started on the recruitment front. And while Bruce has been under fire it is the Geordie manager that is overseeing the drive for new players along with Steve Nickson. Chief scout Nickson has been at recent games to oversee areas that need improving next term. There had been rumours on the circuit that former chief scout Graham Carr was advising but this has been dismissed by club sources. Newcastle have been keeping tabs on the out of contract market and AC Milan midfielder Hakan Çalhanoğlu - a player United have looked at before - is soon to be available for free. Loan deals for Hamza Choudhury of Leicester City and Man United's Brandon Williams could be revisited.
