." The shop will be open 8am to 9pm most days with extra staff added at the start and end of each day to help with the extra customers, Mr Forster said that precautions such as sanitisation and longer appointments will be taken to keep people safe and customers won't be able to wait in the shop. He added: "We have got to be very careful." The Avenue pub in Shincliffe, Durham, will open its new outdoor space from Monday. This is part of a joint investment project by publicans Alan Bryan and Nicola Kay and Punch Pubs & Co as part of their Inside|Outside investment scheme. Punch designed the scheme, investing over £1m into hundreds of their pubs’ outdoor spaces, to enable publicans trade safely outside in line with Government Guidance. The pair have used the investment to transform an unused courtyard into a sheltered beer garden guests can enjoy all year round. They have installed astro turf, a shelter, seating, festoon lighting and heaters. Mr Bryan said: “Once the pandemic hit, we knew we had to adapt our business. Particularly as it was becoming increasingly clear we needed to bring the great pub atmosphere outside. It’s created space for up to 30 socially-distanced guests. As restrictions ease, we can move the tables around and seat even more people. We can’t wait to see our guests enjoying the new beer garden.” Operations manager Jason Moran added: “It’s been great to work with Alan and Nicola on this project. They have delivered innovative ideas from day one and it’s been fantastic to see them come to life. Their enthusiasm and determination to provide a safe space for locals to come together has created a better pub for years to come.”
