"It’s pretty difficult for an American — and I do think we actually did a lot of good stuff — but I do think it’s difficult in a lot of countries to deal with the cultural stuff, all kinds of stuff. There are just all kinds of variables.“I think there are interesting teams in the Premier League that have great history and it would be nice to see them getting back to it. The Newcastles of the world. Great, great fanbase. "Those are the kind of things I think would be interesting to be a part of with a good group (of investors) and there’s more rationality there (at league level) in many ways, right?”AS Roma's president James Pallotta poses before presenting the Rome's new stadium project during a press conference on March 26, 2014 in Rome (Image: GABRIEL BOUYS/AFP via Getty Images)13:41Sean McCormickMonday lunchtime storiesWATCHSean McCormickLee Ryder's Tottenham review09:26Sean McCormickSign up to our NUFC newsletter09:13Sean McCormickMonday morning's top stories08:24Sean McCormickWelcomeGood morning and welcome to Monday's live blog. United's attitude to Gayle, who will sign a new three-year deal in the coming days, reveals a club looking to shore up the value of assets and also a player aware of the new financial realities to pen a contract on less money than he was on previously. The club seem to be driving some of the big contract decisions with Bruce saying on Friday: "I think he’s talking to the club and it’s almost there, I believe. Good news for him." The Chronicle poll that showed 95% of fans wanted him to leave was brushed off by the club, who have form on this. When Alan Pardew was under pressure and the subject of a campaign to remove him, it made Newcastle more determined to back him and it took the man himself to move to Crystal Palace to force a managerial change. It would be little surprise if Ashley's thinking was along similar lines this time, judging by the speed with which he backed Bruce despite the Brighton loss.Read the full story, here.Mike Ashley (inset) is set to stick with Steve Bruce despite the defeat at Brighton10:37Sean McCormickNewcastle are looking at out of contract players this summerNewcastle are looking at out of contract players as part of tentative recruitment discussions as they adapt to the new financial reality for Premier League clubs. The Magpies are in a fight with Fulham for survival and relegation would have serious implications for the club with most of their big earners on deals that don't have clauses related to relegation. But United are also planning for survival and despite pressure on Steve Bruce externally, the club have backed him as question continue to be asked about his suitability as Newcastle boss. But the club believe he will get the wins required.Mike Ashley's rule has always been that the club must cover its own outlay and that will be the case again this summer, with Newcastle now looking at ways to squeeze the most out of a very limited budget. There are some decent free agents this close season, with Eintracht Frankfurt's Jetro Willems still on the club's radar despite a lack of minutes. His close friendship with Allan Saint-Maximin makes him an ideal signing - the pair dove tailed effectively in the 2019/20 season. He is also wanted by Marseille, who made an offer to sign him in the January transfer window.Of the Premier League potential free agents West Brom's Kyle Bartley, John Lundstram of Sheffield United and Andros Townsend are of interest. Newcastle, of course, need to bag the wins required to secure their survival first. Read the full story, here.
