PremierLeague-News.Com - Breaking Sport Transfer News ! When Newcastle United were routed by Chelsea on the day before Valentine's Day in 2016, Steve McClaren was given the kiss of life by the Magpies hierarchy. A risible collapse in South London was enough to push Newcastle into the bottom three. Georginio Wijnaldum - whatever happened to him? - parried questions about what on earth was going on back to reporters with a pointed reference to ask those above him why it was spiralling out of control so quickly. But Lee Charnley polled influential players and surmised the dressing room was not lost. Newcastle headed to La Manga to try and revive the season: their instinct was to back the manager. Charnley kicked the can down the road and three weeks and two defeats later, McClaren was gone. It was the wrong call - a disastrous, history-defining one that set the path to a relegation which has caused deep damage to Newcastle - but at least you got the impression the hierarchy, belatedly, were aware of the winds of change swirling around the club. At least they asked the question. They retain the belief that Bruce, despite flatlining form, can do that job and with little sign of new arrivals they are staking the club's future on him doing it with the players already at his disposal. Listen to the Everything is Black and White Podcast as Lee Ryder hits out at NUFC's performance The problem is, a club run like this - without a long-term plan to progress - is playing with fire. It feels like a dereliction of duty and Steve Bruce - as the only senior figure whoever talks - is being hung out to dry. Not that the manager - who railed against histrionics after the bout of fury that greeted a dreadful exit to Brentford's second string in December - is blameless for the problems. The back page of the Chronicle on January 13 after the loss to Sheffield United But he's dealing with a reckoning that has been in the post from the moment he was appointed. It was a decision that was far from universally welcomed and after ticking off the requirements of a first season salvage job following Rafa Benitez's acrimonious exit, United have reverted to type on his watch. It's tediously predictable and the trajectory is worrying.

. 20th for chances created, in the bottom two for possession accrued, 20th for touches in the opposition third, most shots conceded - the collapse in form we're now witnessing was clearly signposted. Pundits might have queued up to lecture United fans - some crowed about proximity to the Champions League as recently as last month - but this is less a work-in-progress and beginning to look more like baked-in regression. Since they hinted at promise by beating Sheffield United 3-0 in the weeks after football emerged from its lockdown hiatus, United have won just six of the following 26 Premier League games. There has been no hint in that sequence of a plan to arrest the decline. Last season, United reverted to safety first, digging in to scrap for points. It was ugly but successful. What's worrying now is that those safety first measures simply aren't working: United continue to concede, continue to look wide open and - to put it bluntly - continue to lose. Bruce once talked about Newcastle's teak-tough dressing room being relied upon to "respond" in adversity and it has been that way for the group that Benitez first bought together. But this run - which includes taking one point from two teams in the bottom three and scraping a fortunate win against the other, who subsequently sacked their manager - has not hinted at a reaction on the horizon. The effort of that Liverpool game - which should be the norm - now feels like a shining beacon. For me it's gone beyond the point where the debate is about whether Bruce can take Newcastle forward. There's been no evidence of that of late - either in terms of points or, perish the though, entertainment. It has now moved onto whether United's Premier League position is in genuine peril on his watch. They have Arsenal, Leeds and Everton to come. If the losing run continues, the disappearing act of the power brokers will be simply inexcusable.
