Dumitru Camerzan, 41, of Thistle Road, Thorney Close, Sunderland, had 165mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath- when the legal limit is just 35mg. He had been driving a VW Golf in Washington on the A1 southbound on the slip road towards the A1231 on March 20, when he was involved in a crash. At South Tyneside Magistrates' Court last Tuesday, Camerzan pleaded guilty to one count of drink driving. The court heard how Camerzan, who was represented by defence lawyer Charlie Carr, had no previous convictions.

She told him: "It's extremely serious because it's such a high reading. "You were driving on the A1, you were aware you had been drinking, all of this makes it very serious." However, because he had never been in trouble before and the judge said it was unlikely there would be any future trouble, he was given a suspended sentence. The judge handed him a 17-week prison sentence which was suspended for 18 months and disqualified him from driving for five years. He was also ordered to pay £213 and carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.
