Kath Crawley has been teaching for 32 years and had arrived at ITV's studios expecting to be interviewed on the news about her long decades of dedication. Instead it turned out to be the culmination of months of undercover filming during her last year before retiring, as the team from the hit show staged a series of Operation Thank You Miss surprises featuring former pupils. Kath's current pupils at St Thomas’ CE Primary School in Ashton-in-Makerfield, also appeared by video link to say a very special thanks to their favourite teacher and suggest retirement gifts, ranging from a bottle of gin to an inflatable unicorn, which were presented in her new holiday home. Viewers heard she had taught 1,300 pupils, inspired generations of youngsters and been at the heart of her local community for nearly four decades. Kath's pupils appeared via video link on the show. (Image: Willerby) Ant and Dec said the show wanted to celebrate all she had done as a teacher, as well as doing charity walks, taking the school choir to elderly people’s homes and giving up her lunchtimes to help children who most needed her support. She was shown waiting outside with her daughter Becky for what she thought was going to be an ITV News interview about her career as a teacher, before being ushered into the glitzy Saturday Night Takeaway studio.

Speaking to Ant and Dec, a tearful Kath said: “Teaching has been my life. Being a parent is the best job in the world, but being a teacher is just like being a parent but to a lot more children.”

The caravan will be located inAvon Wood Holiday Home Park to give Kath access to her favourite part of the Lakes.
