. It’s devastating and the last thing I thought I’d hear." Ms Joel said police told her that the body discovered matched the description of Richard but an official identification is still yet to be completed. Specialist officers found body in Wake Valley pond in Epping Forest on Monday, April 5. Specialist divers began searching ponds in the forest.
Richard, 19, was last seen on March 22
Richard's mother previously said her 19-year-old son was "struggling to cope" after shielding since March 2020 due to his sickle cell disease. Richard would only leave the house for hospital visits and Ms Joel said he had never behaved like this in the past. Richard had started his first year of a Business and IT degree at Oxford Brookes University. Richard was reported missing on March 24 after being last seen by his mother on the evening of March 22, having left the family home in Ladbroke Grove saying he was going to meet a friend without taking his wallet, jacket or medication. CCTV footage confirmed Richard's last sighting on a residential street in Loughton heading in the direction of Epping Forest after midnight on March 23.
