Every Fish Bar in Harrow was crowned among the winners of the '50 Best Takeaways' in the UK Fry, the leading publication for the fish and chip shop sector covering more than 10,500 chippies nationwide. It is a prestigious award in the industry and the restaurant was the only fish and chip shop in London to receive the accolade. UK Fry had a rigorous process in place to decide the winners. They undertook unannounced mystery dining visits and the takeaways would be marked on more than 40 aspects of their business, from the quality of the food and customer service to their social media presence and Covid-safe practices. Of course the food remained the main focus, with all outlets assessed on the flakiness of the fish, the crispness of the chips and the crunch of the batter, alongside value for money. Despite Covid restrictions, the group of winners passed with flying colours and scored more than 97 per cent overall.

Every Fish Bar is one of the few Black-owned fish and chips shops in the UK and shop owner Mohammed Gbadamosi, 40, described his passion for food and a desire to change careers to open up the takeaway. Previously, he spent 15 years in the care industry but spotted an opportunity to open the shop given there was a lack of one in the area. "I think the community has been very welcoming," Mr Gbadamosi said happily. Fish and chips is permanently on their menu as their staple but the menu also "reflects their identity," including a lot of dishes stemming from his Nigerian heritage. There are such delicacies as peppered fish, jerk fish, Jollof rice and patties which the owner said "you wouldn't see in a regular fish and chip shop".

Unfortunately for Mr Gbadamosi, he experienced discriminatory and racist comments from certain customers. He recalled: "A customer was like 'don't take this wrongly, but I think it would be good if you had a white face to front the shop because some people might not be comfortable buying fish and chips from a black person because it's not something they’re used to'." The owner retorted: "I was just like why would I have to do that? If someone is not comfortable buying from me because I'm a black person that's not the customer I want. "He said he was comfortable buying from me. If some people are not they're not the right customer for us."
