Caroline Surgue had begun exploring alternative ways to get a diagnosis when the NHS booked her an appointment last night (Tuesday, April 6). The carer discovered she might need a test when she took her daughter to the doctors to see if she was autistic. That, Caroline explained, was also a lengthy process. “I've always known my eldest was autistic, but it took me until she was 16 years old to be told [she definitely was]," she said. “When she was diagnosed the paediatrician turned around to me and said to me ‘and you've got it too'." Caroline had discovered a few years earlier, when her father had become unwell, that other family members were autistic. Autism explained People who are autistic do not have a medical condition with treatments or a cure, it simply means a person's brain works in a different way from other people. However those with autism do sometimes need support to help them with certain things. It means they might sometimes find it hard to communicate and interact with other people or struggle to understand how other people think or feel. Things like bright lights or loud noises can be overwhelming, stressful or uncomfortable for autistic people and they might get anxious or upset about unfamiliar situations and social events. Autisitc people might take longer to understand information and do or think the same things over and over The carer said she has been on the waiting list for two years, and believed she was facing another two, until last night when she was contacted by the NHS to arrange an appointment. Before that she spent time attempting to see if she could get a referral for diagnosis with the National Autistic Society - a charity set up to help more than 700,000 autistic people in the UK and their families. She’s also considered paying for it out of her own pocket. Caroline added: “I suffer from high anxiety and...I also feel sometimes overwhelmed in big crowds and I prefer to be with someone, from what I've looked into it is part of the autism spectrum.” Some places have special rooms designed specifically to help austisic people deal with situations or environments they might find difficult. These are facilities Caroline currently cannot use because she is yet to get a diagnosis.

. "I have to get a proper diagnosis.” According to the latest figures published by the NHS, the average waiting time nationally between an autism referral and diagnosis is 317 days. A tough year Caroline has had an intense 12-months, working in a care home in Thurrock, Essex she was on the frontline of the Covid-19 pandemic. She then contracted the virus herself just days before the festive season. Caroline explained: “Even though I followed everything to the tee I still got Covid and I suffered really badly during the Christmas period, it was the first time ever I wasn't at home at Christmas, I was in hospital." Her health rapidly deteriorated but she struggled to get admitted to hospital. The NHS’s Track and Trace service were in regular contact with her, but every time she called about going into hospital, they were reluctant for her to do so. With weakening breath and a soaring temperature it became clear that she needed help, her husband dialled 999 only to find it was a four hour wait for an ambulance. He, like all but one of her family had been infected with Covid, so they began to panic about how they would get her to a hospital. Given her perilous condition he was given special permission to drive her there. It turns out it was just as well. “I was very lucky to be alive,” she continued. “If I hadn't [got to hospital] probably got a hell of a lot worse.” Once she was admitted she had a mixed experience in one ward she was not happy with her treatment, the other was excellent. Things were made harder by the fact her phone lost charge when she went into hospital and couldn’t speak to her family for days. Read More Related Articles
