PremierLeague-News.Com - Breaking Sport Transfer News ! Virgil van Dijk continues to work on his comeback from a serious knee injury as Liverpool fans eagerly await the return of their talismanic centre-back. The £75million signing has been sidelined since last October after requiring surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee following a challenge from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the 2-2 draw at Everton. The centre-back's absence has been acutely felt by Jurgen Klopp's men, who are now locked in a fight to secure a Champions League spot despite leading the Premier League table at Christmas. Van Dijk has been in rehab after the knee operation was hailed a success and videos of him running again had Liverpool fans talking about when he will return. Here we bring you a full round-up on the influential centre-back and the very latest on his comeback trail. What happened to Virgil van Dijk? The defender was on the receiving end of a challenge from Everton goalkeeper Pickford during the Reds' 2-2 draw at Everton last October. The Liverpool defender hobbled off at Goodison, with Klopp admitting after the game that the injury did "not look good". Scans later revealed he suffered damage to his anterior cruciate ligament and required an operation. Van Dijk then underwent surgery in London at the end of October, which the club confirmed had been carried out successfully. "Virgil van Dijk has undergone surgery on the knee ligament injury he sustained earlier this month," a club statement read. "The Liverpool defender’s planned operation took place in London and was conducted successfully. "Van Dijk will now immediately focus on the beginning of his rehabilitation with the support of the Reds’ medical department." What stage is Van Dijk at now in his recovery? The former Southampton defender released a positive update back in February when he was videoed working on his rehabilitation in the gym. Reds boss Klopp had stated it would be a "miracle" if Van Dijk made a return before the end of the season, but that didn't stop him from naming him in his 25-man Premier League and Champions League squads. The video that Van Dijk shared showed him weight training at Liverpool's training base In Kirkby. He then took to Twitter again in March, showing himself running again, leaving Reds fans to wonder whether he would be back before the end of the campaign. November 30, after Van Dijk’s operation “Of course we are in contact,” Klopp said. “Considering the circumstances he is doing well but the knee doesn’t look good. “It doesn’t look how a knee should but looks okay considering the surgery he had.” January 20, after the first video emerges on social media “I don’t know what is possible and what is not possible; I don’t think I’m the right person to judge that 100 per cent,” said Klopp. “He looks really good. I spoke to him this morning, I had him on the phone – he is in a really good mood. So it’s all very promising. But I don’t know when he will be back. “There are for sure a lot of stages still to go over or pass or whatever. That’s clear. I had this injury myself. “But for the time we are in and for how long he is out now, how long the rehabilitation is going on, he looks really, really promising. But that’s all.” Feb 2, prior to Champions League squad announcement "Whatever happens, I think we have space for Virgil on the Champions League list. I think he was on the Premier League list. Nobody told me I have to change something with that. If we have space in the Champions League list then Virgil will be on the list," Klopp said.

. "I don’t want to say that’s absolutely impossible but it’s not likely. It’s not likely. We don’t have to discuss these things really. "If we have space we would put them all on, even when all the medical people tell us there’s no chance. We put them on because we believe in miracles from time to time. "But if there’s no place then we have to consider these kind of things and say, 'The chance is not too big so we have to make the decision.' But if they are on the list then it’s only because we hope for nearly a miracle. That’s it." Klopp appeared to rule Van Dijk out of being ready for Euro 2020 but said that, ultimately, it was out of his hands. "It is not my decision [for the Euros] but to be honest the information I have in the moment is that it will be unlikely," said Klopp. "So it is not that I don't let [Van Dijk and Joe Gomez] go, because I don't want to have to do that anyway, it is because of the extent of the injuries. "We all hope they will be ready to start pre-season with us, that's what we all hope. With Joel, it is pretty much the same. "These are really serious injuries and it is now not about talking about which competition they play. "As far as I know – and I am always open for positive surprises and they all of a sudden turn up in team training but no-one told me that." But Dutch boss Frank de Boer says he will give Van Dijk as much time as possible to prove his fitness and stopped short of saying that he would not be available. "He’s going according to plan. And that plan has always been that it is just a little bit at a time. We know he has eight weeks left. I don’t know if that’s enough," he said. “I have spoken to him, he is going to the field. There can be all kinds of setbacks. A week or two of setbacks could mean he can’t play games for Liverpool. Then I can imagine that they say: 'Nice, but you can focus on next season.' Ultimately, he must have a good feeling himself. I’m glad he’s on the right track. "We will see. I’m not putting any pressure on him at all. He must do it himself and must have confidence in it himself. The choice mainly lies with him.” When will we see him in a Reds shirt? It's almost certain, judging by what Klopp has said, that he will not be back for Liverpool this season as they pursue a top-four finish. Van Dijk has not been ruled out of making the Netherlands squad for the Euros, particularly after de Boer's comments, but he is likely to name his squad once the Premier League season is over. The likelihood is, however, that Van Dijk will be available for the Reds for the start of next season, providing there are no setbacks in his rehabilitation.
