PremierLeague-News.Com - Breaking Sport Transfer News ! Playing without a recognised striker is not a new experience at Everton. From David Moyes, through Roberto Martinez and now to Carlo Ancelotti, a succession of managers have picked teams with no centre-forward. Not all have fared as well as Ancelotti did here at Molineux as Everton picked up a significant, top four-boosting win, but they all shared the same reason for going without a No9: necessity. No Everton manager decided it was time to shake things up tactically, invoke their inner-Pep Guardiola and choose to play without a striker in the team. They did so because they had to. Ancelotti, of course, had a choice as he plotted Wolves' downfall over the last couple of days but he blamed the “different reasons” why both Richarlison and Cenk Tosun were named on the bench, instead of filling in for the injured Dominic Calvert-Lewin - and why he decided to play with Gylfi Sigurdsson and James Rodriguez as the two most advanced players. In the end it worked – and Everton's first goal was a triumph for the system – but it's not a long-term solution to future games without Calvert-Lewin or Richarlison. Ancelotti and his players should rightly be applauded for making an experimental system - not even practised according to goal-scorer Michael Keane - work so well but Everton need to find the type of back-up that doesn't require the manager to roll the dice like this too many more times. Details on Richarlison's absence have been sketchy but whatever ruled him out of the FA Cup tie with Rotherham United had obviously not cleared sufficiently for him to start. Because if he had been, he would've started. So why not Tosun? He'd scored in the win over Rotherham and while he hasn't played a lot of football, it was still expected he would lead the line. The assumption was he'd be in the starting XI. Take our 30-second Everton transfer survey and let us know what Carlo Ancelotti needs to do in the January window. Ancelotti is forever keeping us guessing and didn't disappoint here, but perhaps Tosun will have been taken aback most by this one. But, then again, it may have simply reinforced the feeling that the Everton boss is not completely sold on the Turkish striker. “I am happy with Tosun," was his typically diplomatic, man-management answer in the build up to this, but certainly in the summer, if not this month, then the Blues need to recruit adequate cover up-front. Moise Kean's exit feels more inevitable by the end and should Everton and Paris Saint Germain be able to thrash out a deal once the season is over, then a replacement will need to be found. If Tosun decides he needs to leave Goodison this month, for the good of his international form ahead of the delayed Euros, then the Blues would have to have someone lined up to come in. . Sign up here - it only takes a few seconds! Josh King, out of contract in the summer and clearly determined to return to the Premier League, is consistently linked with Everton although, for the record, the club were playing down any interest in the last window. But you can see why he has been talked about at Goodison and why key members of the backroom staff are fans of his.  Experienced enough to fit with Ancelotti's desire for players who can make an immediate impact, he has top flight experience, and with only six months left on his contract with Bournemouth, there could be a deal to be done. Everton were trying to distance themselves from the rumours in October but watch this space. Would Ancelotti have felt the need to play without a striker this evening if he had a fit King as an option? It's hard to see that he would have done. Who was your Everton MOTM at Wolverhampton Wanderers? Take our quick poll and let us know But this isn't about King, per se, but about having the right man in reserve, especially if Kean moves on. After all, it is not a new problem for the Blues. Moyes used Marounane Fellaini, Martinez stuck Steven Naismith up there and David Unsworth, in his caretaker stint, used Sigurdsson as the striker in a Europa League tie – but that it remains something having to be dealt with by Ancelotti, is a concern. Marcel Brands, in negotiating hard with Juventus, will have imagined that come the start of the 2021-22 season, Kean would comfortably have been that man.  That appears in some doubt now.  And while Ellis Simms is rated highly, the gap from where he is, to first-team level, is still too big. Credit to all involved, as Rodriguez and Alex Iwobi were the stand-out players who helped make the system work as well as it did at times. But it's not a formation that will always yield such returns. Everton, whether that be in a tricky market this month, or in the summer, must find a reliable back-up for Calvert-Lewin. Marco Silva wanted Mario Mandzukic in what would be his final summer at the helm but didn't get him. If Ancelotti wants an experienced striker to come in as back-up, you'd feel more confident in Everton delivering.
