PremierLeague-News.Com - Breaking Sport Transfer News ! As the clamour for Liverpool to bring in a January centre-back goes on, the club themselves are taking a more considered view. With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez expected to be out for the majority of the campaign and Joel Matip's ongoing inability to prove his fitness for any lengthy period, Jurgen Klopp's options have been stretched to breaking point. It has shunted Fabinho, one of the most reliable midfielders around, into the defence to be partnered, at times, by one of either Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips. Even captain Jordan Henderson was named as a centre-back alongside him in the recent 1-0 defeat at Southampton. It's become a glaring problem for the champions, even if the 21 goals conceded in 17 games does not make that immediately apparent. Reports naming the Premier League champions in connection with Sergio Ramos, David Alaba and Sven Botman have been both tentative and speculative. Even with a settled and fully fit squad, Liverpool's name rarely disappears from the transfer rumour mill, but reports are becoming more varied and tenuous as the month goes on. One player who is of genuine interest, however, is Brighton's Ben White. Liverpool scouted the centre-back extensively last season during his loan spell with Leeds, with talent spotters regularly dispatched to Elland Road to watch him in action in the Championship. Despite positive reports, there was always an acceptance that White would need more seasoning at the top level. Leeds tried and failed to land White on a permanent deal last summer, seeing three bids rejected as the Reds looked on from afar. Liverpool were aware of that interest but were informed White would be signing a new contract at the Amex before it became official at the start of September. Inside Anfield's recruitment department, though, there would be no hopes dashed. After all, the detailed scouting was done with a long-term view. Liverpool work to a system that sees them scour the market for two transfer windows ahead, meaning any assessments filed on White was done so to potentially take a closer look in the summer of 2021. The ECHO understands that all work in the recruitment department at present is focusing on the summer transfer window when the club will likely have a better idea of their financial footing. Scouts are believed to place their findings into one of four categories marked A to D at Anfield, although it is unclear what grade will have been given to White as his maiden season in the Premier League enters the second half. It is the clarity this forward planning provides that enables the club to move quickly and decisively if and when a target's availability become realistic. Behind the scenes, sporting director Michael Edwards and his team work hard to build up good working relationships across the football network to move when the green light is given. The acquisitions of both Takumi Minamino and Diogo Jota were able to be concluded swiftly because of such ground work. As it appears increasingly likely that any centre-back arrival will join this summer rather than January, White's ongoing development in the Premier League will be more acutely in focus. But just what could we expect from the defender should he arrive? Firstly White stands at 6ft which is decent if unremarkable for a central defender. Although he is well-built and this aids him in 1v1 duels with opposition forwards.

. For comparison, Joel Matip has the best Premier League defensive duel success rate at Liverpool this season with an average of 67 per cent. White makes use of his size to compete well in the air, winning around 58 per cent of his aerial duels so far this season. This comfortably betters what makeshift centre-backs Fabinho and Henderson have been averaging, and it’s slightly higher than Gomez’s average before his injury of 55. However, it’s some way off the 66 per cent-plus averages that are regularly posted by both Matip and Van Dijk. Therefore this is an area that may need further development should he arrive at the club. For Brighton, the 23-year-old has been predominantly used as a right-sided centre-back due to being right-footed. However, there’s clearly versatility to his game, highlighted by the fact that he’s also been utilised as a right-back, left-sided centre-back and even as a defensive midfielder. *Transfer news, rumours and analysis...sign up for The Gossip newsletter. This versatility will be an extremely attractive trait in the eyes of Klopp. As we’ve seen throughout the defensive crisis this season, the Liverpool boss likes to be able to call upon his players to fulfill different roles when the team requires it. Beyond being strong in defensive duels, which, although important, does only account for a small part of a defender's game, the former Leeds loanee has also illustrated a capacity to read the game well and be a leader within the backline - facets crucial to his appeal. He’s also fast, meaning he should be able to cope with the demands of Liverpool’s high defensive line. In terms of behaviours on the ball, it wouldn’t be unfair to label the Liverpool target as a ball-progressing centre-back who remains cool under pressure. The system deployed at Brighton by Graham Potter is one centred around possession, and as a result, White will regularly be used to commence attacking sequences. At roughly 46 per 90, he doesn’t currently average the number of passes he would be at Liverpool which is usually somewhere between 60-75 per 90 as a centre-back. His pass success rate of 85 per cent is solid and there’s a willingness in his game to play penetrative balls over the top or through the lines when the opportunities present themselves. Who would you like to see Liverpool sign this summer? Let us know in the comments below. He will also happily step out of the defence and drive forward with pace and purpose, and it’s this skill that has undoubtedly led to him being using in the wing-back positions on occasions this season. Based on all of the evidence above, it’s easy to see why Liverpool are legitimately interested in the defender. Upon arrival, he’d be much needed adequate defensive cover, however he also still has his best years ahead of him, meaning he can develop even further and could easily go onto being a key defensive mainstay for the Reds for many years to come.
