These were the horrific injuries suffered by a 37-year-old man attacked as he walked to work, with a level of violence described as "frankly obscene" by police. The victim was savagely assaulted near to Firbeck in Skelmersale, but managed to stagger down the street to Ferndale, Birch Green, a third of a mile away. Here, he collapsed, at 7.30am, last Sunday. The man was rushed to Aintree Hospital where he remains in a serious condition. Police said the man was lucky to be alive. Today, detectives released a photograph of the man and his terrible injuries in an effort to persuade members of the public to come forward and help their enquiry. "We hope this image, which shows the severity of the injuries inflicted, will prompt members of the community to come forward.
