so a 95 per cent level means a 30-minute trip will take 29 minutes more than with no traffic.\nThe last time the congestion in London was at the levels seen this week was during the RMT strike on March 1, when it reached an unprecedented high of 119 per cent. This suggests that fewer people were on the roads in the capital both this morning and yesterday morning, when compared to the strike in March.\nThere were 2,046 traffic jams in the capital this morning, covering a total length of 834 miles.","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Mark Duell"},"mainEntityOfPage":{"@id":"https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/live/article-10938465/TfL-Tube-strike-LIVE-UK-rail-updates-Day-2-updates-chaos-continues-London-Underground.html","@type":"WebPage"},"publisher":{"@id":"https://www.dailymail.co.uk#publisher"},"image":"https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/06/22/09/1655886803820_lc_galleryImage_tomtom.JPG"},{"@type":"BlogPosting","headline":"Busy London Overground services and queues outside stations","url":"https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/live/article-10938465/TfL-Tube-strike-LIVE-UK-rail-updates-Day-2-updates-chaos-continues-London-Underground.html#lc-id-51","dateModified":"2022-06-22T09:16:07+01:00","datePublished":"2022-06-22T09:16:07+01:00","articleBody":"The London Overground services that are running this morning are very busy, with queues forming outside stations as these tweets show:","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Mark Duell"},"mainEntityOfPage":{"@id":"https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/live/article-10938465/TfL-Tube-strike-LIVE-UK-rail-updates-Day-2-updates-chaos-continues-London-Underground.html","@type":"WebPage"},"publisher":{"@id":"https://www.dailymail.co.uk#publisher"},"image":"https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/06/22/10/59381985-0-image-m-21_1655890798883.jpg"},{"@type":"BlogPosting","headline":"Don't be Vladimir Putin's 'friend', Tory MP Tobias Ellwood tells unions","url":"https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/live/article-10938465/TfL-Tube-strike-LIVE-UK-rail-updates-Day-2-updates-chaos-continues-London-Underground.html#lc-id-50","dateModified":"2022-06-22T09:15:23+01:00","datePublished":"2022-06-22T09:07:16+01:00","articleBody":"Conservative MP Tobias Ellwood told Sky News today this week's rail strikes are causing 'huge self-harm' to Britain, and urged the unions to avoid being Vladimir Putin's 'friend'.","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Mark Duell"},"mainEntityOfPage":{"@id":"https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/live/article-10938465/TfL-Tube-strike-LIVE-UK-rail-updates-Day-2-updates-chaos-continues-London-Underground.html","@type":"WebPage"},"publisher":{"@id":"https://www.dailymail.co.uk#publisher"},"image":"https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/06/22/10/59381985-0-image-m-21_1655890798883.jpg"},{"@type":"BlogPosting","headline":"Greater Anglia trains due to fault with river swing bridge in Suffolk","url":"https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/live/article-10938465/TfL-Tube-strike-LIVE-UK-rail-updates-Day-2-updates-chaos-continues-London-Underground.html#lc-id-49","dateModified":"2022-06-22T09:06:36+01:00","datePublished":"2022-06-22T09:06:36+01:00","articleBody":"A fault with a river swing bridge at Somerleyton in Suffolk today means all lines are blocked, which is affecting Greater Anglia trains between Norwich and Lowestoft. We know that the cost of living challenge is there, we know that it affects workers across the board.\n'But the one thing that will keep inflation higher for longer and undermine pay packets for longer is if we have spiralling public sector pay increases beyond what is responsible. We really do understand the pressure that those on low incomes are facing at the moment, they are struggling to make ends meet.'\nSetting out why public sector pay could not keep pace with inflation, he added: 'If we don't have those restraints, inflation will go higher for longer. And that will only undermine the pay packages of workers, particularly the most vulnerable workers, for a longer period of time. We're taking the action, we're taking a firm line with, for example, the RMT union, precisely because we want to protect this erosion of pay packets by inflation.'","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Mark Duell"},"mainEntityOfPage":{"@id":"https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/live/article-10938465/TfL-Tube-strike-LIVE-UK-rail-updates-Day-2-updates-chaos-continues-London-Underground.html","@type":"WebPage"},"publisher":{"@id":"https://www.dailymail.co.uk#publisher"},"image":"https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/06/22/10/59381985-0-image-m-21_1655890798883.jpg"},{"@type":"BlogPosting","headline":"Transport Focus says today will be 'quite a messy day' for rail passengers","url":"https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/live/article-10938465/TfL-Tube-strike-LIVE-UK-rail-updates-Day-2-updates-chaos-continues-London-Underground.html#lc-id-29","dateModified":"2022-06-22T07:52:00+01:00","datePublished":"2022-06-22T07:52:00+01:00","articleBody":"Disruption caused by yesterday's rail strikes will mean that 'today is going to be quite a messy day', for travellers, the independent watchdog for transport users said this morning.\nAnthony Smith, the chief executive of Transport Focus, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: 'Today is going to be quite a messy day still.\n'Virtually all of the train companies have special timetables in place, services are starting up late and trains and staff are not in the right place. However it is slightly down on the level at the same time yesterday – the first day of the rail strikes – which was 98 per cent. Yesterday’s figure was also a big rise of 21 percentage points on the 77 per cent level recorded at 8am on Tuesday of last week. The congestion level represents the extra travel time for drivers on average compared to baseline uncongested conditions - so a 95 per cent level means a 30-minute trip will take 29 minutes more than with no traffic. The last time the congestion in London was at the levels seen this week was during the RMT strike on March 1, when it reached an unprecedented high of 119 per cent. This suggests that fewer people were on the roads in the capital both this morning and yesterday morning, when compared to the strike in March. 'We are facing a global struggle against inflation, if you look at the UK figures they are broadly comparable to the US or, in Europe, the Dutch and the Belgians, and it's going to be difficult. We really do understand the pressure that those on low incomes are facing at the moment, they are struggling to make ends meet.' Setting out why public sector pay could not keep pace with inflation, he added: 'If we don't have those restraints, inflation will go higher for longer. And that will only undermine the pay packages of workers, particularly the most vulnerable workers, for a longer period of time. We're taking the action, we're taking a firm line with, for example, the RMT union, precisely because we want to protect this erosion of pay packets by inflation.' 'We can't allow the unions to win this argument.'Deputy PM @DominicRaab accuses rail unions of perusing strike action in a "very militant way", adding that their actions "will only hurt the poorest in our society".#KayBurley: https://t.co/Unn57w5m6U???? Only around 60 per cent of the 20,000 normal weekday services will be able to operate today. Walkouts by signallers and control room staff who would usually work overnight from last night into this morning meant trains left depots later than normal, delaying the start of services. Trains normally leave depots between around 3am and 4am, and passenger services begin between around 5am and 6am. But the process of taking trains out of depots today only begin when signallers on daytime shifts started work at 6am to 6.30am, meaning no passenger services ran before 6.30am. The start of services is expected to take up to four hours in some locations. But in London, services will increase quickly as trains do not have to travel long distances from depots to stations. Network Rail said that 'even during the day the service will stay thinner' than usual and some operators will wind down services slightly earlier than normal. 06:56 Disruption on Northern services through Burnley due to lineside fire Northern Rail services, which were crippled by industrial action yesterday, are already facing other issues this morning after a fire next to the railway at Burnley Manchester Road meant trains are unable to run between Blackburn and Todmorden / Hebden Bridge.
