PremierLeague-News.Com - Breaking Sport Transfer News ! A dad-of-four refused to stop his car for police and sped off at up to four times the speed limit, a court heard. Police on mobile patrol in Stapleton tried to pull over Shannon Smithers after reports that a Mercedes A Class had been speeding in the early hours of June 30 last year. But when they located him he drove off and led police on a 4.6 mile high pursuit which lasted just five minutes. After stopping his car, Smithers repeatedly bashed his door against a police car and damaged it. The 29-year-old, of Walsh Avenue in Hengrove, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, failing to provide a breath specimen and causing criminal damage. Judge Michael Longman handed him a ten months jail term suspended for two years. He told Smithers: "This was an appalling bit of driving. "You had been drinking and you were in no fit state to drive. "Police wanted to speak to you and you drove off. "It was very, very dangerous driving.

He then tore down Speedwell Road at 70mph, turned suddenly and accelerated up to 80mph through a 20mph zone. After further speeding and contravening a 'no entry' sign he stopped the Mercedes and repeatedly slammed his door into a police car, damaging its front nearside wheel arch. The court heard that, after being arrested and taken to Patchway police station, he was abusive to police and declined to take a breath test. Giles Tippett, defending, said his client was a man of two sides. Hs said Smithers could be hostile or volatile, but also cooperative and insightful and was willing to engage and address his demons. Mr Tippett said Smithers had a partner and, at the time, they were caring for four children in his one-bedroom flat. Mr Tippett told the court: "He accepts he was in drink at the time of the offence. "He was feeling pressure at the time."
