There have been eight more coronavirus-related deaths recorded in Bristol and its neighbouring areas today (Saturday) according to official figures. The Department of Health's latest data shows two deaths occurred in Bath and North East Somerset. Bristol confirmed four deaths today (February 20), while two more people died in North Somerset. Our city's Covid rate per 100,000 cases now stands at 140.1 - slightly above the national England average of 131.1. South Gloucestershire confirmed the second-highest rise of 45 and a rate of 132.9.

Scientists said the virus reproduction value - known as R - was estimated to be between 0.6 and 0.9 in our region, which is lower than England's which is 0.7 to 0.9. It is the first time since May 2020 that the R rate has been as low as 0.6 anywhere. The R rate means on average in the South West every 10 people who have contracted the virus will only spread it to between six and nine people.
