PremierLeague-News.Com - New Solihull M&S will have 'Fill Your Own Stations' to help reduce food packaging as well as a clothing, food and home department and 126-seat cafe
PremierLeague-News.Com - Breaking Sport Transfer News ! M&S has announced when it will close its store in Mell Square Solihull - ready to move two miles away to Sears Retail Park. The plan was only first made public in February 2020, a month before the first lockdown. But even though the country has been through three lockdowns in the past year, it is set to open its newly-built store next month. M&S says the new store will feature "extensive clothing, food and home departments as well as a 126-seat M&S Café." The existing Foodhall has itself been upgraded in the last few weeks ready to offer "Fill Your Own Stations" to increase portion flexibility and to reduce food waste and plastic packaging. Whether you have a large family or are a single-person household, the self-filling range will include "staple ingredients and frozen essentials." The new M&S at Sears Retail Park will then open at 9am on Wednesday, June 2. From that date, customers will see how the Foodhall will have been joined by the rest of the vastly-expanded store, built on adjacent land that was formerly Homebase. With a 425-space free car park directly outside of the front door, the Sears Retail Park M&S will be more accessible than the Mell Square site. By coincidence, the new M&S will be opening in the week when Birmingham city centre will be ringfenced by its new Clean Air Zone which launches on June 1. From that date, motorists in non-compliant cars will be charged £8 per 24-hour day (from midnight to midnight) to cross the middle ring road. M&S High Street remains in Birmingham city centre, but the company's other out-of-town developments in the past five years include Longbridge, Selly Oak Shopping Park and Moseley Foodhall. On September 17, 2019, M&S opened a Foodhall inside WHSmith in Sutton Coldfield having previously closed its main store in the town.

. Primark's old store on New Street closed on April 10, 2019 and "the world's biggest Primark" opened the day after on April 11. In Solihull, Mell Square will close on Tuesday, June 1 and staff will then transfer to the new store which will open at 9am on Wednesday, June 2, 2021. With 82,000 sq ft of floor space, the M&S Solihull store is smaller than both its 150,000 sq ft sister store in Longbridge, opened by Twiggy on November 4, 2015 and the High Street Primark which is 160,000 sq ft. The new developments in the Midlands are part of the M&S plant to fight back - it posted its first loss in 94 years on November 4, 2020, just three months after it announced 7,000 job cuts nationwide.
Loss-making M&S will be hoping its new Sears Retail Park store will banish the dark clouds of the Covid-19 pandemic once it opens in June, the month that third lockdown restrictions will finally be eased
