PremierLeague-News.Com - Breaking Sport Transfer News ! Households are missing out on thousands of pounds in discounts, freebies and cost of living cash because of a little-known DWP income boost option. MoneySavingExpert founder Martin Lewis has dubbed it a "national tragedy" that so many people are failing to take advantage of what's on offer. Extra financial help from Pension Credit can be worth up to £3,300 a year. But however much you are awarded, it also opens the doors to an array of other discounts and freebies worth thousands more. Notably, as part of the Chancellor's £15 billion package to battle soaring household bills, the income boost is also a qualifying factor for the £650 cost of living payment and the additional £300 pensioner cost of living payment. READ MORE: Cost of living boost worth over £1000 for everyone who isn't on DWP or HMRC benefits Pension Credit is designed to help with daily living costs for people over State Pension age and on a low income, though you do not need to be in receipt of State Pension to receive it. It tops up a person's income to a minimum of £182.60 per week for single pensioners or £278.70 for couples. Latest figures from the DWP are that up to an estimated 850,000 eligible households are not claiming Pension Credit worth £1.7 billion, an even higher figure than the 770,000 a minister previously suggested. What's crucial to bear in mind is that however much Pension Credit you get - even if it is just £1 a week - it is a gateway benefit that opens doors to cash support with other costs such as rent, council tax, heating, NHS charges - and a free TV licence for the over-75s. Each local authority runs its own scheme so check with your council 3. £650 Cost of Living Payment - this is being provided in two instalments, with the first part of £326 going into accounts on July 14, and the second part in the autumn. Pension Credit is among the seven means-tested benefits that qualify for this sum. 4. Cold Weather Payments - £25 for each seven-day period of freezing weather between November and March 5. Warm Homes Discount - a one-off £140 rebate on your electricity bill between October and April 6. Martin Lewis, founder and chair of MoneySavingExpert.com, said: "Amidst the cost of living crisis, it’s a national tragedy that getting on for a million pensioners are missing out on a major income boost. My simple rule of thumb is if you (or someone you know) are aged 66 or older, and have total income of under roughly £200 a week, get online or call the Pension Credit claim line to see if you’re due a payment that can be as much as £3,300 a year. I’m not saying everyone will get it, but many will, and it only takes a few minutes to find out. So don’t stall, just call. "And not only is this serious money, it’s also often a gateway entitlement that means you’re due a range of other support, such as council tax reductions, the £650 extra energy funding help, warm home discount, housing benefit, dental and optical treatments and, for the over-75s, a free TV licence. So again, don’t stall, just call." Dame Clare Moriarty, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice, said: "At a time when millions of people are struggling with the rising cost of living, it’s more important than ever that people are getting the support they’re entitled to. Pension Credit can be a really important boost for older people who are struggling with a low income. Citizens Advice can help you to understand if you might be eligible and advise you on how to make a claim." Rich Mackenzie, DWP Visiting Officer, said: "Many people who could claim Pension Credit aren’t. I would appeal to anyone who comes into contact with pensioners to ask how much they know about Pension Credit. It could be something that helps, and in the current financial climate, there’s no doubt that more people will experience hardship. "Pension Credit won’t solve every problem, but it will go a long way to alleviating difficulties. It should be a collective endeavour for us all.
