Megan Newton Megan Newton was studying at Newcastle College to achieve her dream of becoming a sports therapist or physiotherapist . Extremely popular with a wide circle of friends, there was nothing more Stoke City fan Megan loved than football. The former Trentham High School student played for Stoke Town under-18 ladies team and gave up her weekends to coach Norton Wanderers' under-7s team. However, in April 2019 her life was cut tragically short after she was brutally murdered when she was just 18 years old. It was an act of kindness that led to her life being cut short thanks to the evil of Joseph Trevor. What happened to Megan Newton on the day she died? On the day of her death, Megan had got a new tattoo. She had then completed a shift at a fish and chip shop - one of three part-time jobs - before heading home to change and going to Kiln nightclub, in Newcastle. But a fun night out with her friends ended when she ran into semi-pro footballer Trevor, who she knew from her days at Trentham High. On the night of the murder, Trevor came to the attention of the police after he was spotted by door staff with a bag of ketamine. Under the influence of alcohol and drugs, Trevor was worried about what his police officer parents might say if he turned up at the family home in the state he was in. Megan offered him a way out by agreeing to let him stay at her Arch-ran flat off Fletcher Road, Stoke, so he could sober up. At 3.45am they left Newcastle in a cab. Exactly how the events of that night unfolded only Trevor knows. It seems that Megan rebuffed his advances so Trevor instead raped and strangled her with his bare hands for up 15 to 30 seconds. As she lay naked and unconscious he got off the bed, armed himself with a knife from the kitchen, returned and stabbed her nine times in the neck area of her back. Letting himself out, Trevor threw away the key and calmly walked to a bridge over the A500 in Stoke. Who was Megan Newton's killer Joseph Trevor? Joseph Trevor raped, strangled and stabbed Megan Newton to death Joseph Trevor - aged 19 when he was sentenced - turned out to be one of Stoke-on-Trent's youngest ever killers despite a 'normal' childhood growing up in Danebower Road, Trentham, and had a fairly average childhood. The son of two Staffordshire Police officers, the court heard that he 'came from a decent, close, good and supportive family'. He was studying for his A-Levels at Newcastle College, and had a scholarship from an American University. He was a talented goalkeeper who played semi-professionally for Newcastle Town Football Club. However, Trevor's life spiralled when he started abusing drugs and his mental health deteriorated. How was Megan Newton's murderer Joseph Trevor caught? Trevor was found with his legs the wrong side of the railings on the A500. After being spotted by a passer-by, he was taken to Harplands Hospital before he was collected by his dad. At this point no-one knew what he had done. But the full horror of that night soon became clear when Megan's neighbours found the keys covered in blood later that morning that they let themselves into her flat and found her naked, lying on the bed and face down.

. He told police they'd had consensual sex and that his memory went blank after that. Trevor pleaded guilty to her murder and two additional charges of rape on the first day of his trial. He was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 21 years and 65 days and placed him on the sexual offenders list. What did the judge say? In court, Judge Michael Chambers told Trevor: "She had invited you to stay in her home that night as an act of kindness because you had too much alcohol and drugs. You felt you were in no fit state to go home to your parents. "The attack on her was driven and motivated by your serious and violent sexual conduct. You raped her, you went on to strangle her. "You went on to arm yourself with a knife from the kitchen area. And stabbed her no less than nine times to the neck and back penetrating her chest and both lungs." What did Megan Newton's family say about her death? Megan Newton was found dead at a property on Fletcher Road in Stoke-on-Trent Megan Newton's father, Michael Baggaley's statement in court read: "The thought of never seeing her beautiful smile or hearing her voice again breaks my heart. How could this happen to such an amazing, caring, kind, loving, funny young lady? This is something I will never understand and get over." Did Joseph Trevor have any previous convictions? Trevor had been accused of orally raping a 14-year-old girl, a case which was never prosecuted. The court heard the sexual assault allegation led to his 'very public arrest at school' at the age of 15. As a result he was given the nicknames 'paedo' and 'Rolf Harris' by his peers. During his trial, Joseph also admitted that the reason he killed Megan was because she apologised for telling people he had raped a girl. Did Joseph Trevor have mental health issues? Trevor had a history of depression. Just weeks before the murder, in March 2019, Trevor had made a suicide attempt but was talked down from jumping from a bridge over the A50. The court heard he was suffering from 'depression' stemming in part from the sexual assault allegation. Adrian Keeling QC said while there was 'evidence of depression' it 'operated at a low level'. Where is Megan Newton's killer Joseph Trevor now? Joseph Trevor is currently serving a life sentence in jail.
