PremierLeague-News.Com - Breaking Sport Transfer News ! West Bromwich Albion are back in for pre-season testing this Thursday as they begin planning for their assault on the Championship under Steve Bruce’s tutelage. The Baggies will make for Portugal on Sunday before returning at the beginning of next month and embarking on their friendly fixture list. Sam Johnstone has departed for good, meanwhile. A £6million signing in the summer of 2018, the England international went on to make 167 appearances in four years as first choice goalkeeper for Albion before leaving the club this spring upon the expiry of his contract. When it became clear that he’d be moving on, Johnstone was dropped from Bruce’s match-day squad for the remaining weeks of the Championship season as Albion limped to a mid-table finish. A new goalkeeper, though, is not being considered at this stage with existing pair David Button and Alex Palmer set to battle it out for the gloves. Button, the more experienced of the two, ended the season as the club’s number one and is the likeliest as of now to start between the sticks when Albion commence their 2022-23 season at the end of July. Palmer, who played almost 100 matches for Plymouth Argyle and then Lincoln City in successful loan spells between 2019 and 2021, will likely deputise. Big things are expected of Griffiths who, at the age of 19 in March of last year was called up to the England under 21s as part of their European Championships squad. He, like Palmer, has spent two seasons out on loan in the lower reaches of the EFL.

. Imagine, for example, that Griffiths returns to The Hawthorns in the summer of 2023 - with still a couple of years left on his contract - having notched up the best part of 150 career appearances and still being only 21. Still, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that Griffiths - who missed the back end of Lincoln’s season with injury - could yet force his way into Bruce’s thinking right now if he were to enjoy a particularly eye-catching pre-season campaign, working alongside Button, Palmer and goalkeeping coaches Gary Walsh and Boaz Myhill. That might appear fanciful at this stage, and with Griffiths right now there is neither a reason to rush his development, nor is there a reason to bestow additional pressure with more experienced heads and proven pairs of hands at Championship level around him. It’s understood that Portsmouth are quite keen to take Griffiths on loan after their loanee from last season, Gavin Bazunu, was sold by Manchester City to their local rivals Southampton. Blackpool, of course in the same division as the Baggies again next term, could be a potential destination now that Michael Appleton - who took Griffiths last term - has been installed. Griffiths has an exciting future ahead of him, and while there is no immediate rush, and with loan offers aplenty expected, he’ll be welcomed back to the Albion training ground this week with a slim chance of forcing his way into the first-team reckoning.
