The NHS has released its regional coronavirus vaccination figures for the first time - and it shows the Midlands is leading the way. 447,329 doses have so far been administered in the NHS Midlands region which combines the East and the West Midlands. The next highest region was the North East and Yorkshire, with 433,045 coronavirus vaccine doses administered. The South East has administered 411,257 doses, while the North West has done 318,445. South West and London have administered 285,000 and 237,000 respectively, with the East of England on 236,023. There were also 2,452 listed as other, including some people who live in Scotland and Wales. In total in England, 1,036,605 aged 80 or over have received a first dose, while 960,699 were given to those under 80. . On Wednesday, Asda separately announced one of its Birmingham stores will be the location of what is thought to be the first supermarket in England to host a vaccination centre, on January 25. Ramping up the vaccination rollout is critical with frontline healthcare workers across the city locked in a race to save lives. On Tuesday, the University Hospitals Birmingham trust said it was redeploying 200 doctors to intensive treatment units (ITU) and scaling-up capacity to deal with up to 1,000 Covid patients, with up to 280 intensive care, in a bid to head off being "overwhelmed" by a third wave of infections. London Mayor Sadiq Khan claimed the capital was not getting its fair share of vaccine doses. "The situation in London is critical with rates of the virus extremely high, which is why it's so important that vulnerable Londoners are given access to the vaccine as soon as possible." He said he would hold talks with vaccine minister Nadhim Zahawi "to ensure that we urgently receive an amount of the vaccine that reflects our size, density and the level of need in our city".
