. "We were surrounded by the locals, it had obviously reached them all, it was very basic when we first went in, very basic in the fifties, it was just a mattress on the floor, there was no heating, the kitchen was really really basic." The series will see them explore five decades of South Asian history in Birmingham (Image: BBC/ Wall to Wall) Each episode was filmed over the course of a week, and the family were expected to fully immerse themselves in that decade. The family were given their own shop in Sparkbrook too. Manisha explained: "I moved to Birmingham in 1986, we had the shop in the late 1970s, but all my uncles have shops, so I really went back in time. We had grown up in shops, it was very real in that respect, I felt so happy my kids got to experience it, it’s so hard to explain that there’s a shop in your front room and you live in the backroom and upstairs.” Expect to see scenes shot across the city too, as the family follow in the footsteps of Birmingham's first Asian families. The series shows the family visiting the region’s first Asian cinema in the fifties, entertaining the aunties at home in the sixties and enjoying a bhangra evening with musical legend Balbir Singh in the seventies. The four-part series will air over four nights on BBC Two from tonight, Monday, June 20 to Thursday, June 23 at 8pm. It will also be available on BBC iPlayer.
