PremierLeague-News.Com - Breaking Sport Transfer News ! In Joe Lumley, Reading FC are getting a player hungry to prove himself this coming season. That is the verdict of Middlesbrough expert Dominic Shaw following the goalkeeper's switch from Teesside to Royals. Lumley, 27, became Paul Ince's first summer signing last week, signing a year-long loan deal at the Select Car Leasing Stadium. READ MORE: The major change at Chelsea which could impact Reading's transfer activity in summer window The shot-stopper started last season as Boro's number one but lost his place towards the end of the season as Chris Wilder's side just missed out on a play-off position. The former QPR youth product is now hoping to kick-start his career once again under Ince and he is expected to be the club's new no.1 going into the 2022/23 Championship season. To find out more about what to expect from Lumley, we spoke to Dominic Shaw from our sister site TeessideLive to give us the lowdown on the new Royals goalkeeper What type of goalkeeper are Reading getting? "Lumley is experienced, having played more than 150 games. And despite an up and down season at Boro, he played more games last year than he has in any other campaign, so he'll have benefited from that. "At 27, he'll feel there's still plenty of opportunity to improve but he's also at a stage in his career when he needs to be playing. That wouldn't have been the case had he opted to stay at Boro for next season. This move suits all parties." What are his strengths and weaknesses? "Lumley has shown that he can be a good shot-stopper, he's confident and when things are going to plan he looks like he really enjoys his football. "At Boro, though, he was inconsistent. A fine save would be followed by a cheap goal conceded. His decision making was costly at times as well, often failing to convince when coming for crosses." Middlesbrough's Joe Lumley (Image: CameraSport - Andrew Kearns) He played most of Boro's games last season and kept 13 clean sheets - what went wrong? "After a relatively solid start, mistakes quickly started to creep into Lumley's game and he often looked uncertain and shaky. He was signed as No.

. "Lumley quickly established himself as No.1 under Chris Wilder but never particularly convinced and there was surprise on Teesside that Wilder didn't look to sign a new keeper in January. "In fairness to Lumley, he did his best to try and adjust to the way Wilder wanted Boro to play, which meant playing with his feet and being prepared to almost act as a sweeper at times. He didn't look particularly comfortable, though, and as fans grew nervous, his confidence must have taken a hit. "As you say, however, Lumley did keep 13 clean sheets and put in some impressive displays over the course of the season. He was excellent in the defeat at Reading in September and in the draw at Derby." What do you make of that and is it justified? "As detailed above, come the end of the season a lot of Boro fans had lost faith in Lumley, and it was clear Chris Wilder had too, with Luke Daniels playing in the run-in. "An exit was inevitable. Wilder will sign two keepers this summer so Lumley wouldn't get a look-in this season. "Some of the criticism is fair given Lumley struggled throughout the campaign, but as mentioned above he also demonstrated in flashes that he's a capable keeper at this level. Hopefully the fresh start will do him good." Can you see the loan being turned into a permanent one if the move is successful? "Definitely. It's fair to say Lumley looks to have played his last game for Boro. He's moving into the last year of his contract and Wilder will strengthen between the posts this summer."
