PremierLeague-News.Com - Breaking Sport Transfer News ! A former social club that has sat empty for decades is to be given protected status. Reading gas works social club and surrounding buildings lie off Gas Works Road, near the River Kennet. The buildings on the site were all built at different times between 1840 and 1913. The social club remained open as the Southern Gas social club until around 1993, according to Reading Borough Council documents. Despite the changing nature of the town in the decades since then the site has remained derelict. It has sometimes been listed among the eyesore sights in Reading that are in need of redevelopment. Now however a decision is set to be made on whether to preserve the site. The club site could be added to Reading's register of 'Locally-Important Buildings and Structures (‘the Local List’).

. A Reading Borough Council report said the site was one of the few remaining signs of gas production in Reading. The report said: "The two buildings on the site together with the boundary walls form an identifiable industrial group linked with the bridge over the Kennet. Together with the gas works bridge constructed 20 years earlier to access the new gas works, down river at King’s Mead, they are the only physical remain of gas production in Reading. The last gas holder has now been dismantled so that the site can be developed for housing." Reading Borough Council will now decide whether to add the building to the local list. A decision is set to be made at the council's Planning Applications Committee on Wednesday, June 22.
